Introduction

Introduction:

Throughout life we as people naturally learn about balancing different elements of our lives, and in my most recent years two of the bigger things I’ve had to balance was School and Work. During my time at SLV, I have noticed that most of my peers have values for this school and the one I see the strongest and frequently displayed is community. I’ve seen this through multiple different ways like, always showing school spirit, offering a wide selection of clubs, helpful interaction with new students, and overall giving a safe space for our valley. This strong sense of community is not just in the school however, I also notice this during the time I spend at work. Cali Style, a local family run business that was founded by my father, is more than just an ordinary valley store, It's a reflection of the community. My father’s intent with the store is to serve the valley locals with clothing and skate gear that is typically overlooked in the valley, and usually requires a farther trip. With Cali Style we try to help the local community as much as we can, and with what I have taken in from my experience at SLV and the SLOs will allow me to help Cali Style grow on what it was intended to do.

 Store History:

Cali Style’s history traces back to 2012, it was established across the street at a shopping center from the current location, the Kings Village Shopping Center. At first, the store was started from a close friend of the the current owner who wanted to start a shop because of his passion for skate culture and took the step in order to create a retail shop. The store overtime became a well known local shop for people in the valley to be able to save a trip to Santa Cruz, and for finding high quality apparel, shoes, skateboards and accessories.

After about 4-5 years of the store’s establishment, the business continued to grow, but the original owner had to step away from being the owner of Cali Style and eventually sold the store and ownership to Tyler Best and his then wife. With their efforts, they continued to keep the store thriving, going on to build the store’s legacy, with commitment towards offering the community of Scott’s Valley a nice and welcoming store for all. Eventually, Tyler took full ownership, following their separation, and has since dedicated himself to the wellbeing of the store.
Tyler had been working as a painting contractor but had been looking for a career that would get him out of the physical labor business. Since he had some previous experience owning a small business, I thought that starting another one would be the most logical choice. He also wanted something that he could pass on to his children.
Before becoming a painting contractor, he had some retail experience too, so once he found out about his friend's business going up for sale, he thought It would be a great idea to make an offer.
Now, after 11 years, the family has a thriving retail skate/clothing shop that will last as long as someone is willing to handle day to day operations.

Future Style

Future Style:

Cali Style has been around for about half of my life, and what I've seen Cali Style stand for the most is community. We create a space where people locally can save a far trip to find the things they love, and my goal is to stick with this deeply connected local identity of Cali Style, while also trying to grow as much as possible. Expanding inventory, keeping a fresh rotation of clothes and skates, possibly even bigger dreams of new locations, my goal for Cali Style's future is to build a brand that people can rely on, with that same community feel. Here's how I contribute to that.

My Style:

Studying Business:

I'm taking my eduction to Cabrillo College to study business in order to grow my knowledge in how to expand and sustain and buisness. The things that I'm going to pick up from college, I plan to use to help influence me to make improvement inside the store, I also plan to one day eventually be able to start my own businesses with the potential traction of Cali Style, possibly making a chain of businesses.

Building

Experience:

I'm in the store almost everyday so I have a good sense of what customers shop for and how we can keep improving our selection of products. It's not just about showing up either. However, it's about being attentive and learning from the experience to continue supporting the store. I'm also always asking questions frequently on things that can help extend my knowledge of the store overall, like how the store operates, skate/scoot construction, etc.

Keeping The Store Fresh

I help out on choosing and planning which new drops or restocks to rotate in to keep the shop from feeling dull. Apart of that task is making sure I'm giving my dad new suggestions on brands, rearrangement ideas, creating and picking up orders, so the store gives customers a reason to come back and see what's news in stock.

My first skateboard complete build

This was a video taken my first official day on the job. I was told in advanced and practiced to complete the skateboard test by starting from scratch and building a complete skateboard from the ground up.
